Conférence – « The Symphony in Britain and Ireland since 1900. A Critical History » – 27 novembre 2023

Conférence de la « North American British Music Studies Online Colloquium Series », en ligne, 27 novembre 2023.

« Dr Nicholas Jones (Cardiff University, UK) will be speaking on the forthcoming multi-authored volume, The Symphony in Britain and Ireland since 1900: A Critical History (Cambridge University Press)

The story of the symphony in Britain and Ireland in the twentieth and early twenty-first century offers a particularly rich and fertile topic for scholarly investigation. Notably, it is a period that has witnessed the creation of an extraordinary number of symphonies, written by an equally significant number of composers of widely varied backgrounds, interests, identities and agendas, each with their own stylistic voice, technique and singular approach to the compositional problems and opportunities that the genre presents. With a long and distinguished lineage, the prestigious and revered status of the symphony inevitably sets up certain expectations and invites comparisons to symphonic works of the past. How have composers working in the British Isles responded to this challenge? In what ways has this tradition been reinforced, and to what extent has it been radically reimagined? In this talk, Nicholas will outline the main objectives of the book, introduce the international team of contributors and their chapters, and offer a view of the project from the editor’s perspective. »
