Appel de conférences pour le colloque « 2025 Grainger Symposium: Music and Fashion », Grainger Museum – Université de Melbourne, 10-12 décembre 2025.
« The music and fashion worlds have always been closely linked, with each exerting significant influence over the other. The intersections between these art forms occur in practically all genres and time periods: from costume designs for film, ballet and opera, from Bollywood to the Ballets Russes; partnerships between musicians and fashion houses, such as Maria Callas’s collaborations with Yves Saint Laurent and Dior, the Sex Pistols with Vivienne Westwood, or Kanye West’s Yeezys; musicians who themselves design and make clothing, such as Percy Grainger’s towel outfits, the ‘King of K-Pop’ G-Dragon, or former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham; and performers who build their ‘brand’ around not only their musical works but also specific visual choices, including the Beatles’ bowl cuts or Yuja Wang’s Louboutins.
This conference explores the intersections between fashion and music across time, intending to initiate productive discussion between scholars from both disciplines. The Grainger Museum is pleased to host an event examining these themes, as Australian composer and pianist Percy Grainger was deeply interested in fashion, as can be seen though the Museum’s extensive holdings of men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, and designs.
Presentation topics might include, but are not limited to:
- Costume design and its relationship to music
- Musicians as designers
- Brand collaborations
- The performance of gender and sexuality through clothing and music
- Appropriation in both music and fashion
- Fashion in music iconography
- The expression of musical fan cultures through dress
We will also consider proposals relating to music and fashion archives and cultural collections, including the Grainger Museum and Collection. »
Date limite de soumission : 30 juin 2025.
