Appel de conférences pour le colloque international « Im Schatten Wagners. Oper in Deutschland um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts », Mainz, 24-25 mai 2024.

« The conference will use the concert premiere of the completed “Gunlöd” at the Peter Cornelius Festival in Mainz on 25 May 2024 to take a fresh look at opera creation in the temporal and spatial context of the creation of Richard Wagner’s earlier major works as well as his central journalistic writings. Papers on the music-dramatic work of Peter Cornelius are particularly welcome, but papers on other German opera composers and their works of the 1850s and 1860s would also be appreciated. The following questions, and others, may be addressed during the conference: What compositional and formal strategies can be observed in German operas after “Tannhäuser” and “Lohengrin”? What knowledge of current developments did Wagner acquire in exile and after his return? Which themes and topics were preferred? »
