Appel de conférences « Intersections between Devotional and Secular Music in Fifteenth- and Sixteenth-Century Urban Confraternities & Communities », Society for Confraternity Studies, Renaissance Society of America Conference, Chicago, 21-23 mars 2024.

« This session sponsored by the Society for Confraternity Studies explores how confraternities and other groups within urban centers in France, the Low Countries, and Italy promoted the composition of new music that served as markers of identity. We invite papers that investigate new composition practices that emerged through unique collaborations between lay and ecclesiastical communities in confraternities, urban puys, and chambers of rhetoric in northern France and the Low Countries; and also those that developed in musicians’ communities in the Kingdom of Naples, which was home to many musicians from Spain and the Low Countries. Interactions between these different groups of men and women led to the composition of new Latin plainchant as well as new vernacular poetry set to music. The surviving plainchant compositions feature unique texts lauding the attributes of these communities’ patron saints, and in some cases they borrow melodic devices that have their origins in vernacular love song traditions. These musical works were upheld by such communities as solidifying forces that helped to define their identities. We are aiming with the papers in this session to show how urban communities played a central role in constructing their own religious devotions in various contexts throughout western Europe. »
