Appel de conférences – « Broadening Music Performance. New Approaches and Possibilities for Higher Music Education » – 10 janvier 2025

Appel de conférences pour le colloque « Broadening Music Performance. New Approaches and Possibilities for Higher Music Education », University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom, 26-27 juin 2025.

« In recent years, the higher music education sector has undergone profound changes, including: disruptions to music education and musicians’ careers caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; economic austerity which has widened social inequalities of access to performance education; changes in response to evolving digital technological practices; and persisting neoliberal ideologies that perpetuate self-exploitative structures and endemic inequalities, with wide-reaching ramifications for performers’ identities and wellbeing (e.g. Springer, Birch and MacLeavy, 2016; Cheng, 2016; Canham, 2022; Musgrave 2023). Music performance, which by its nature is a transcultural, socially embedded and collaborative activity, can be particularly susceptible to the above-mentioned inequalities and challenges. Despite various HE-wide initiatives to tackle some of these issues—including campaigns to decolonise the music curriculum or raise awareness about EDI in music studies (e.g. Bull, Scharff and Nooshin, 2023)—there is ample scope for more concrete change. Lack of funding and barriers to equitable access to performance opportunities in pre-university education mean that new pedagogical approaches and practices are desperately needed for addressing these gaps within HE and for preparing performers for non-linear careers. »
