The Global Interculturalism and Music Peripheries Interest Group (SMT) is inviting proposals for its meeting at the 2023 AMS/SMT Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado (November 9-12) on music in Latin America, a region formed by countries that share musical histories, interests, and challenges, but have their idiosyncrasies.
« Presentations will be 12-minute lightning talks. Thematic areas may include—but are not limited to—the following:
- Music Theory in Latin America: Inheritance and Perspectives
- Reception and Impact of European and North-American music theories in Latin America
- Selected Latin American works that have been influenced and/or inspired by the local political climate
- Influence of African music in Latin American music (any genre) – Afrodiasporic
- Combination of Native and European elements arising new music genres in Latin America
- Impact of Latin-American thinking and musical languages in other regions of the world
- Consideration of the political-social context at large in analyses of Latin American works
- Topics, narrativity, and intertextuality in Latin American music
- Music theory pedagogy in Latin America
- Theory and analysis of nationalistic repertoires or Latin-American popular music
- African music styles and traditions: its harmonic practices and how it is inherited outside of the continent.
General areas may include Music theory and analysis in tonal and post-tonal contexts; meter and rhythm; intersections between music analysis and performance; intersections between music analysis and composition; interdisciplinary approaches; other areas. »
