« To deceive the eye or ear, to idealise human forms, to imagine utopian worlds, to astound an audience – from Antiquity to the present day, artists and creators have harnessed the imaginary, illusion and deception for various means and purposes. Today, augmented and virtual realities, artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies are rapidly shifting the boundaries of music and visual culture, as seen, for instance, in the creation of the virtual K-pop girl band, Eternity. Is this a new era in terms of our willingness to seek and celebrate an alternative reality: one in which musicians never tire, nor buckle under pressure? Or is it simply a timely version of the deceptions, hoaxes, quests for perfectionism and virtuosity of the past? »
