« On the occasion of the first centenary of Ferruccio Busoni’s death (1924-2024), the Conservatorio “V. Bellini” is pleased to invite submissions of proposals for “A Busoni Experience”, an international conference to be held from 27 to 28 May 2024.

The conference aims to enrich our understanding of Busoni’s life and works, moving from recent studies on the composer’s school and legacy, in order to explore relationships with the German and Italian musical and artistic world in the second part of the 19^th and at the beginning of the 20^th centuries. Busoni will be considered as the main focus of a renovation process – of musical theory, aesthetics and dramaturgy –, which will finally blossom during the Weimar Republic. articular attention will be paid to the history of the International Piano Competition “F. Busoni”, founded in 1949.

The conference is open to musicologists and performers, as well as scholars of the visual and performing arts. We welcome paper proposals on a wide range of themes, including, but not restricted to:

• Busoni’s life and works;
• Busoni pianist and his transcriptions for piano;
• Die Junge Klassizitätand aesthetics studies;
• Modernism and the Arts;
• One-act operas as experimental forms;
• The myth of Faust in late 19^thand 20^th centuries;
• Busoni’s sketches and drafts;
• Border composers between Italy and Germany;
• The International Piano Competition “F. Busoni”;
• Busoni’s heritage in music and performing arts.

The official languages of the conference are English, German, French and Italian. Selected papers from the conference will be published in a miscellaneous volume.

Papers are limited to twenty minutes in length, allowing time for Q&A sessions. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words, as long as a short bio.

All proposals should be submitted via email no later than ***26 April 2024*** to <convegni@conservatoriocatania.it>. Within your proposal document, please include your name, contact details (postal address, e-mail and telephone number), and (if applicable) your academic affiliation. The same e-mail address can be used for any further information.

The committee will make its final decision on the abstracts by April 2024, and contributors will be informed immediately thereafter. Further information about the programme and the registration procedure will be announced after that date. »
