« This conference wishes to explore the unconventional spaces where concerts or musical evenings were organised in the 19th century. Outside theatres and concert halls, in fact, there were many private or public spaces where music resonated in cities all over Europe. The spaces could be outdoors, such as gardens or municipal parks, spas or swimming pools, but also squares or fairs. In all these cases, the study of the acoustics of the place influenced repertoires and settings. But even in the case of indoor spaces, the acoustical context could vary considerably, as concerts were also realised under circus tents, in brothels, casinos, or on ships. »
